UI Redesign

web-app

We've been evaluating Gemini for about a week and are impressed by the feature set.  One of the biggest weak points is the UI.  The entire product could use a facelift- the poor UI definitely lowers its usability.  Otherwise, so far, so good...

UI rediesgn is one of the feature of 2.1 release. However, could you explain why do you think the design is poor?

Sure here are 2 main ones:

1) The navigation elements are spread across the top of the page; the hierarchy isn't clear.  A good designer will see this problem immediately and have ideas for fixing it.

2) Page layout seems to change haphazardly from page to page; sometimes filters and options are on one side of the page, sometimes on another.

As a result, it's hard to internalize the overall structure of the site, and get a mental picture of how all the pages anre inter-related.  Again, something a more consistent design and better navigation elements will address.

Let me know if you guys need any other feedback, I like your product and want you to really succeed...

User Security page
- Using 3 multi-select boxes is an awful way to represent the information.  First, multi-select boxes are just bad in a UI anyway, because they drive people nuts; clicking to select mulutiple options just doesn't work well for many people.  Second, it's very frustrating to use, and rapidly approaches burdensome for large numbers of projects and users, especially when you want a quick overview of the security.  Personally I think a flat view or treeview would be far easier to navigate and use.

Version Attributes
- You should be able to drill into the attributes from the version and create new ones from there.  In fact the only option to do it on the Project Overview page, and it should be removed from there entirely (unless that allows creating attributes for all versions, win which case it should move to the Version Maintenance page).  It took me a while to find it, and in fact I was ready to submit a bug report, thinking that the create option was incorrectly being suppressed from the Version Attributes page.  This was until I looked at the files and found the page I wanted and persisted until I found it in the UI.

Issue List
- Again, this comes from my experience that multi-select boxes should be used sparingly and with good justification, but collapsible flat or tree-style views with checkboxes would be much easier to use, IMHO.  The Resourcing page uses the flat view paradigm nicely.

Project Overview
- The location of the "Create Issue" link drives me bananas.  I have been using Gemini for a while now, and I still gravitate towards the list of links mid-top of the page (below the title) for that link.
- The list of links below the title (Home through Change Log) should be combined with the list of other links below and to the left (Email Alerts through Version Attributes).  Plus the font of the latter list is too small.

Overall, I like the interface, and I must say that I like the colors, but then I'm partial to earthtones.
