Screens - Items vs Projects

Hi. I have been trying to figure out how to use screens, and I don't want to play around too much and break anything. I have figured out that screens can be set both on Items and on Projects. But how are those two related? All I really want to do is hide some unused fields that we don't use in a group of our projects (I'm not concerned with applying screens to user groups).

  • What happens if I set a screen on a project but not on the items? No effect?
  • What happens if I set a screen on the item but not on the project?
  • What happens if I set different screens on both?

If I'm overlooking documentation for this, please just yell at me :) I simply couldn't find the information I need. TIA!

ANSWER

Screens allow you to control who can see what property of an item and at which stage. When viewing a project (project summary or items filter page) the screen of the project is used. When viewing, editing, creating or commenting on an item the screen from the type is used. That's it really.

So to hide a field you need to make sure it is hidden in all screens used.

Ohh, that's surprisingly simple. Thanks.

However, we have two kinds of projects here: website projects and development projects. Both use the "bug" item type, but I want to hide the "Severity" field for all item types in just the website projects. How would I go about doing that? Do I have to create duplicates of all my shared item types, then assign screens?

If so, how do I go about separating the Development bugs from the Website bugs?

Thanks so much!

You have couple of options:

  1. Set the visibility of the "severity" field to only the project group(s) that uses the dev project. So your web project users will not belong to that project group for the web project. This is the desired solution.
  2. Duplicate types and set diffent screens.
