Not showing sub-issues at the top level

web-app

I am using the sub-issue feature of Gemini so I have parent issues which are 'New Feature' and these contain various 'Bugs' and 'Enhancements' as sub issues. This all looks good.

What seems counter-intuitive is that the sub-issues appear at the top level when I view the issues for the project. I had expected only to see the 'New Features', and drill down to reveal the sub-issues.

For example I might have a feature called 'New Web Client' which will have various tasks 'Create Acceptance Tests', 'Fix Startup Bug'. It makes no sense to show 'Create Acceptance Tests' at the top level - because it only makes sense in the context of its parent feature. There might be 10 'Create Acceptance Tests' - each for different features.

Am I missing something really obvious here - or are sub-issues not designed to be used like this?

Thanks,

Stephen

Not quite.

Each issue in Gemini has to be able to stand on it's own, and not look out of place on it's own.

The reason is this: given your example, assume 'Create Acceptance Tests' was assigned to an external party who could not see the other issues in the mix (e.g. parent, siblings, etc.). That external party should be able to just see that ONE issue and work on it. Maybe they cannot see the other nested/related issues due to data sensitivity? Hence all issues must stand by themselves regardless of where they sit in a logical hierarchy.

The other thing to bear in mind is that Gemini ALWAYS shows issues that satisfy your Issue Filter. If your parent satisfies your Issue Filter, then we will show it. Otherwise it is not shown. That makes sense from a pure filtering/searching capability -- what's the point of having the Issue Filter if you are going to ignore it?! But on the flip side, we know that you may well want to see the parent when viewing just a sub-issue -- and we have a plan for this in Gemini 4.0 release!

Finally, Gemini's philosophy is ensuring that we do not leave anyone out -- all who need to participate on a project can do so, whilst ensuring that people only see things that they need to.

Think about it and feel free to give us a call if you want to chat further on this topic.

I agree with everything you say - especially that each issue should be able to stand on its own. I also agree that there should be a way of filtering to see all the child issues for a project (like it does currently).

The problem for me is that there appears to be no way of excluding sub-issues in the filter. So the obvious solution would be if the filter had a checkbox to say whether to include sub-issues. Or is there already a way of doing this?
