I want to know the benefits of using/setting parent component.  Is it just to show the components are related to each other?

Sub-components has been one of the moset requested features and essentiall provides more granular organisation of components.

It also helps visualise your "system": hierarchy of components defines the parts of your system and the relationship between them.
