Repeating task workflow

I am trying to set up repeating tasks but I do not understand how it works. When I add a task, repeating every 1 weeks on Monday (start date 14 jan) the task does not repeat. Instead, the start date remains Jan 14 and is not changed to Jan 21 today.

How shoud I be doing that?

The task will remain as is but a new task will be created and linked to it. The new task is a copy of the original repeating task.
