Install Version 5/5.1 on the same server of versione 4.2.1

Is it possible install the new version (5 or 5.1) on the same server that is running old versione 4.2.1 ?

We run both on the same server but as far as i know, you cant run both off the same DB as you have to run a huge update script on the DB.

We took a copy of the V4 DB restored it to a V5 DB (ran the update script) then installed the app in a new site and app pool and conected it to V5. This was both V5 and V4 are running.

Yes different db and site, backup and restore the database and upgrade it to 5.1, point the 5.1 site to that new database.
