Item being created with wrong status
When a new item is being created under the Help Desk project, the item is being created with the "In Progress" status. The Help Desk users cannot see the field from the create screen. The default status for the project is "New" yet whenever an item is created it has an initial status as "In Progress".

Are you assigning a resource when creating the item (or have a default one)? If so, the status will be set to the first "assigned" status. |

The user picks the resource when creating the item. I think I understand what is happening then. If the user doesn't pick a resource it is created with the "New" status. When the user picks a resource it is created with the "In Progress" status because that has the "assigned status" mark whereas "New" does not. However we want the user to pick a resource as this is the team e-mail address, but we want the item to have a "New" status until the team reviews and changes the status. |

Simply set the "new" status as "assigned" in the Administration -> Status page. |
