Custom attachment field applied to test cases

I created an attachments custom field and linked it to the test case screen to allow users to upload documents that might specify test data or other useful documentation.This works fine - I can attach one or more files and save a test case.

However if I subsequently amend the test case the previously attached item is removed upon save. Does the amend feature keep track of previously entered data in custom fields?
