Is there any way of making component non-mandatory for particular issue types (eg. Task)? I have some tasks that span multiple components.

Unfortunately, no. However, you can set the project to allow multiple selection of components (Project Administration -> General).

OK, thanks that's helpful. In the end discovered I could create a higher-level parent component and apply the task to that.
