Changing Status without creating a comment

web-app

We have recently upgraded from 3.1.2 to 3.7.0 and overall it looks good.

However I discovered that the Status field management has changed so that we can no longer change the status without logging a comment. This is clumsy as often I want to 'take' an issue and having nothing useful to record by doing so.

Is it possible to change the status without making a comment?

I find it rather strange that I can Assign an issue to me quickly and easily but the status does not change correspondingly. Ideally when I assign to me, I would also like the Status to change to Assigned, which is rather obvious. Right now they contradict each other when the issue is plainly assigned with my name in the Assigned To column but the status column says Unassigned.

Yes,it is possible to change the status without making a comment.
You can "inline" edit the status or edit the issue to change the status. Note that you will need to make sure that the edit field visibility scheme for your issue types allows you to view the status field.

As for auto setting the status field, this is only done during issue creation at the moment.
We do have it on our list: http://gemini.countersoft.com/Default.aspx?p=2&i=350

Do you mean editing the status when it is shown on the issue list grid? The status cell is yellow when I hover on it but it is not editable, unlike the Severity cell which changes to a drop down list when I click it.

Yes, if it doesn't allow you to change it then it is probably because the field visibility scheme for the issue type does not allow you to view the field in edit mode.
Please check the edit visibility scheme for the issue type (Administration -> Issue Type edit the type) and make sure that it allows you to view it (Administration -> Field Visibility Schemes).
