Same custom field on multiple projects

web-app

Hi to all,
it my first post and I have a rudimental knowledge of Gemini, so I hope my question is sensible.

[Note: I slightly re-edited the text of this post to correct some typos.]

I am trying to use a custom Field in Gemini (2.2.6). I created three projects, and for each one I created the same custom field. This means that the custom field has the same name and similar properties in each project, and it is different only on two (important) things: different ID and different (being a drop down box) database table-view to look at.

I have two questions about this:
1) (working as admin) if I click on "All projects issue reporting" on the top of the Home Page, I cannot visualize the custom field I created. If I click on the "customise" link below the issues list, I can add fields but among these there's only one called generically "custom field". If I choose it, It just won't diplay.

I can, though, visualize the Custom Field if I click on Home, then I choose one project, then click on "issues" (link just below the project title) (this also assumes of course I have added the custom field that, at project level, can be added with its proper name). At this point I also have on the left side the Issue Filter. If now I select "All projects" then the custom field is shown, though it only displays data for the currently selected project (the select box on the very top of the screen).

2) I believe the inability to see the Custom field data for all the projects at the same time it is due, right now, to the fact that if I create a Custom Field for each project, even if it shares the same name and most of the properties, it has a differend id.

Now it would be very handy, in certain occasions, to have a custom field that is present in all the projects, and its contents are shown when I select "All projects".

Has anybody managed to achieve this or what I am looking for it's a (potential) feature enhancement ?

Thanks a lot, hoping not to have confused you all.

Alex

Unfortunately, at the moment, this is not possible. Each custom field is identified by its id and not the name (as you've said). Therefore it is not possible (at the moment) to display the custom fields.

The custom field that is there on the customise screen is only a place holder, selecting it will not do the business as you have discovered.

We are looking into adding this: http://gemini.countersoft.com/Default.aspx?p=2&i=194

Feel free to add your comments.

Thanks for you reply Saar.

I undertand how the feature will work in the future version. The behaviour I have described is slightly different though, but I didn't manage to explain it too clearly.

It could be seen as a "special case" of your new feature. Let me explain, maybe you will consider adding this extra to the new version (daring statement!).

Right now I can visualize the custom fields, but only if I am inside a specific project. The cool feature I have seen in the (current) custom fields, is that you can specify a table (or a view, that simply put is a selective query on a table). So by using views, for example, I can now have a specific custom field for each project that is reading different data from the same table. The custom field in each project has the same name, but of course it must have a different ID, as that makes it unique and lets me specify for each project a different view/query. So from this point of view it is perfect to have a field that is called in the same way in all projects, but has a different ID. It would be interesting to consider if it is possible to show all these fields together, when I choose All Project Issues Reporting. (it could be probably possible to make an association between a specific custom field in each project, so that they get displayed in the same column).

Does it sound any interesting, before even being feasible?

Ciao

Alex

Yes, I understand. We are looking to give to ability to filter look up custom fields by project id, component id, version id etc...

This will mean that you can use the gloabl custom field and it will "personalise" itself to the project.
