v2.0.2 to v2.2 upgrade - custom fields maintained?

We are currently using v2.0.2 and will be upgrading to v2.2 in the next few weeks.  I've read the installation guide and it appears that if we follow the steps to upgrade our existing database, all existing data, including custom field definitions, will be maintained.  Can you confirm that is the case?
