How to change assigned status automatically

Can the status field automatically changed to "Assigned" based on the value in resources field. Currently i have to manually change the status field to assigned even if i have assigned a resource to work on it.

Not out of the box. We do have it on our list for 5.0. However, you could write a plug-in that will do that.
