Assign Multiple resources OR create a distrubution list for an new item

Is there a way to setup a project to allow multiple people to be assigned to one item ? Or possibly setup email alerts to send an email to everyone when "nobody" is assigned ?

I want to be able to enter in an item , and have several people be notified.

Yep, you can TURN ON multiple resource assignment via Project Administration -> General
